The Mind/Body/Spirit Spread

After my prolonged absence from this blog (I was very sick with the flu), I thought it might be fun to jumpstart it back up with a three card spread. The spread I chose is for mind, body, and spirit, and I drew the cards for myself, but will share the results with you so that you can try it at home. I used Toni Carmine Salerno’s Universal Wisdom deck.

First, I tried to draw one card for mind, but I wound up with two. Sometimes that happens! They were stuck together. But I don’t mind having two messages for my mind. The two cards I drew were Compassion and Intention.

Compassion, from Toni Carmine Salerno's Universal Wisdom deck

Compassion, according to the book that came with my deck, is a message from Kuan Yin, the bodhisattva of compassion, to be more compassionate toward myself. We can all benefit from this message!

Intention is a reminder that the thoughts in my head will influence what manifests in my life. You can take this as a scientific reminder (you won’t get the grocery shopping done if you don’t think of doing it), or you can take it as a spiritual reminder that the thoughts we think send energy, positive or negative depending on the thoughts, out into the universe. To me, this card refers to all of the above. It’s a reminder to be disciplined not only in my actions but in terms of what I allow to go on in my head. It matters what we think.

The second card I chose, the card for Body, was Om. The word Om and the idea of chanting are much mocked and maligned in our culture, but I’m told that chanting Om is a very healthy practice for the body and that it can help to reconnect a disconnect between body, mind, and spirit. When I looked closely at the book that came with the deck, I found that the entry for Om includes a meditation for using Om to balance and bring fresh energy into each of the seven chakras (which are pictured on the card). I tried it. Hey, a little chanting never hurt anyone!

The third card I drew, for spirit, was Dreaming Landscape. My initial reaction was to think that this card, like Intention, related to manifesting one’s dreams and thoughts in reality. But when I turned to my book, it advised me that this card is meant as a reminder to spend time in nature, renewing body, mind, AND spirit through reconnecting with nature. That sounds good to me — and I like the way that it ties all three cards back together into the mind/body/spirit theme of this spread.

You can play around with this spread using any deck that you wish. If you try it, please comment below and let me know what your experience was like. And don’t forget to om…. 🙂
