It’s generally not a good idea to be dishonest. Pulling from the Wisdom of the House of Night deck, today, I drew Deceit and Obedience. These cards are a warning about lying and betrayal, but they warn the deceitful as much as they do the person being betrayed. In this deck, the Obedience card has to do with following the rules — not just making up new rules to suit yourself, even when you think you have a good reason. That’s not to say that it’s not a good thing to have your own ways of operating, or to march to the beat of a different drummer. But it is to say that if you have to resort to deception to support what you are doing, then you’ve gone too far — even if the deception in question seems like a harmless white lie. It’s better to say nothing than it is to lie, even about seemingly unimportant matters — and when it comes to lying, the issue is this: 1) if the matter is unimportant, why would you want to engage in a negative behavior because of it? 2) If the matter IS important, that’s all the more reason not to muck it up with a lie.
You may not believe me. Some people think that lies can protect them. And there are special cases where that may be true. If you are in the Witness Protection Program, for example, your whole identity may be a lie. But it’s a lie that is meant to protect you. However, those cases are rare. In most cases, an unflagging commitment to truth will do a better job of protecting you, and your reputation. Sometimes innocence and naivete, these characteristics that we tend to assume, in what we think is a worldly-wise way, are sweet ideas that will just make us easy marks or easy victims, are actually a form of protection. Not because lies get all tangled up and eventually are revealed as lies. But because truth and innocence affect a person on an energetic level.
I wanted more guidance from the House of Night deck about the Deceit and Obedience cards that I drew today, so I pulled three more cards: Meditation, Complicated, and Love. Complicated? Yes, deception is always complicated, isn’t it? But we can defeat it with weapons that are simple yet strong. We need a clear mind, discernment, and the ability to rest in the present moment. That comes from meditation. And then we need an unstoppable vibration: love.
So if you’re faced with deception today, and if you are in the midst of being betrayed (or think you might be), don’t focus on worry and obsession. Instead, focus on quiet contemplation and meditation. Don’t stress over the complications. Focus on the simple things: love, and trust. A grounded, loving vibration can’t help but defeat a malicious, hateful one. See through deceit, but then rise above it with a strong, compassionate spirit.
